2020 VITA Volunteers
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax help to people who generally make $55,000 or less. Through this program, IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified taxpayers. Dreams for Change (DFC) is the largest VITA provider in San Diego. This year alone, Dreams for Change has completed over 8,000 returns, which translates into over $13,000,000 in federal refunds. These are dollars going right back into our community, helping families pay rent, bills or debts. This kind of impact would not be possible without volunteers. Volunteers at Dreams for Change receive training and get certified by the IRS. This year, DFC engaged 65 volunteers who prepared taxes at their tax sites, located throughout San Diego County in various malls. The tax sites operate seven days a week during mall hours. This means DFC has a wide range of time slots to fill with volunteers. For 2020’s tax season, DFC is celebrating its 10th year anniversary and is hoping to complete 10,000 returns in San Diego County.
